What is a VIN?
A VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) is the unique 17-character fingerprint of your vehicle. Since 1981 it has followed a global ISO standard, so the same decoding logic works almost anywhere in the world. It never uses the letters I, O or Q (to avoid confusion with 1 and 0).
How to read a VIN (what each part means)
| Position | Name | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| 1–3 | WMI | World Manufacturer Identifier — country & maker |
| 4–8 | VDS | Vehicle descriptor — model, body, engine, restraints |
| 9 | Check digit | Validates the VIN (North America) |
| 10 | Model year | The year code |
| 11 | Plant | Assembly plant |
| 12–17 | Serial | Unique production serial number |
VIN decoding, answered.
Is this VIN decoder free?
Yes — completely free, no sign-up. Paste a 17-character VIN and decode it instantly.
Does it work for other countries?
Yes. The 17-character VIN is a global standard, so we identify country of manufacture, manufacturer, model year and vehicle type worldwide. Detailed specs are richest for North American vehicles.
Where do I find my VIN?
On the dashboard at the base of the windshield (driver's side), the driver's door jamb sticker, and your registration and insurance documents.
Does a VIN show the owner or accident history?
No. A VIN decoder shows the vehicle's built specifications. Ownership and accident history require a separate paid history report.
